Who is Jesus Christ?

You've never met him in person, and you don't know anyone who has. But there is a way to know who he is. How? Jesus Christ - the divine person revealed in the Bible - has a unique excellence and a spiritual beauty that speaks directly to our souls and says, "Yes, this is truth." It's like seeing the sun and knowing that it is light or tasting honey and knowing that it is sweet.

The depth and complexity of Jesus shatter our simple mental frameworks. He baffled proud scribes with his wisdom but was understood and loved by children. He calmed a raging storm with a word but would not get himself down from the cross.

Look at the Jesus of the Bible. Keep your eyes open, and fill them with the portrait of Jesus in God's Word. Jesus said, "If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority." Ask God for the grace to do his will, and you will see the truth of his son.

John Piper has written this book in the hope that all will see Jesus for who he really is and will come to enjoy him above all else.

Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ (Audible Audio Edition) John Piper Lloyd James christianaudiocom Books

There is an intensity about John Piper’s preaching and writing that makes it hard to ignore. He is serious about joy. Here that intensity is directed toward examining 13 attributes of the Lord Jesus Christ. Each of the 13 chapters is devoted to one attribute and ends with a prayer. The book includes a thought-provoking “Afterward” on the self-authenticating greatness and glory of Jesus Christ. Here are some parts that stood out:

• The reason for "wasting" so much space on a universe to house a speck of humanity is to make a point about our Maker, not us.
• No one goes to the Grand Canyon to increase self-esteem. Why do we go? Because there is greater healing for the soul in beholding splendor than there is in beholding self.
• Christ does not exist in order to make much of us. We exist in order to enjoy making much of him.
• The greatest thing that can be said of Jesus' knowledge is that he knows God perfectly.
• In a sense, therefore, all sin is embezzling.

Finally, the book also makes use of one of my all-time favorite sermons, Jonathan Edwards’ sermon on the Lion and the Lamb. After discussing some of the content of Edwards’ sermon, Piper says, “This is what we long for-a champion, an invincible leader.” Indeed.

Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ (Audible Audio Edition) John Piper Lloyd James christianaudiocom Books Reviews

This is one of those books that I re-read every once in a while. It fills me with hope and makes my spirit soar. It's my favorite book to give as a gift—and I'm so disappointed that one can't buy it new in hardcover.
This book is quite unique in its approach. Very short chapters covering a single facet of who Christ is in a very deep way. It is easy to consume in one sense. Yet, in another requires that you think deeply and wrestle with the truth from scripture. I applaud Dr. Piper and thank him for this fine book.
To me all of Pastor John Piper's writings are "genius". This book is awe-inspiring. I just tremble with awe and love and gratitude when I read and re-read the chapter "THE INCOMPARABLE SUFFERINGS.' .
There is no greater thought than one on Jesus Christ. There is no greater theme that we can meditate on in all of Scripture. As usual, Piper points us to the greatest treasure that exists, Jesus. You don't read this book and think that Piper is a great writer. You read this book and are left awestruck out how great Christ is. Great book.
I read this book during a pretty dry and seemingly unfruitful time in my life (part of which I am still going through). If nothing else, God has used Piper to remind me that all of life is about the glory and supremacy of Christ. It is very easy for us to forget Christ as the focal point of all of history, and to look to ourselves or other means for satisfaction. John Piper, a man who is in a singular pursuit of God's glory by the means of revealed truth (the Bible), uses the same scripture to paint a portrait of Jesus Christ that we might leave both seeing and savoring Him more than we ever had before.
This book is nowhere near as difficult a read as many of Piper's other books are, but it exudes the sweetness of Christ in a most extraordinary way. None of the chapters are over ten pages in length, and as one reviewer already noted, each one ends with a prayer. For me, this book has been a great supplement to my pursuit of God in the Word. As always, Piper doesn't skimp on the scriptural meat and brings out verse after verse reflecting on the character and person of Christ. This is a great read for anyone who wants to know more about whom Christ is or even for those who want to be reminded of the sweetness of their Savior.
Including the indices, the book is only 146 pages long. Each paragraph is fairly short, and there is a ton of room at the end of each chapter to journal any thoughts or questions that you might have. Piper offers us two different kinds of indexes at the end of his book, the first is a scriptural index (6 pages long) with the second being a subject index (3 pages long). I've been reading it along with the Pleasures of God [Piper] and The Body of Divinity [Thomas Watson], which has worked out well to (again) emphasize that God is ultimately about His glory and praise from the farthest reaches of the world.
In these brief thirteen chapters, John Piper warms our hearts at the hearth of God's Word to see and savor the person and work of JesusChrist. I was blessed by the simplicity and depth of these meditations to remind my of all that Jesus is and has done. I strongly recommend this book for sleepy Christians to be awakened to the beauty of Jesus, and for "not yet" Christians to be brought to enduring faith in the Lord of heaven and earth. Take and read for your joy!
This book has done my soul good. Piper simply yet wonderfully traces the variegated glories of Jesus Christ through the Bible in 13 chapters. They are as he writes 13 facets to view the diamond that is Christ. May God use this book to bless each soul that reads it to see and savor Jesus above all else.
