From the back cover "Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name." (Jeremiah 1516) The Bible is a feast, waiting to be tasted and savored, waiting to nourish and brighten our souls. But if we do not come to the table aware of what we're eating, we’ll surely miss some of the experience. Eating Your Words invites readers to remember the rich color and texture of the Bible, and to read it with eyes that see and understand the narrative art and craft of its stories. Why? Because grasping the biblical narrators’ literary form and technique allows us greater understanding of the Bible's meaning. So come. Come to the feast. Eat of God's words—as Jeremiah did. See that they are, indeed, sweeter than honey to the mouth (Psalm 119103). Hear and see and believe. Be saved and sanctified by the very active Word of God, as it pierces the innermost being. And yes, see that the true story—as story—is good.
Eating Your Words An Introduction to Reading Biblical Narrative Mr M Kent Travis 9781477663233 Books
Just as the subtitle promises, this book gives an introduction to reading Biblical stories. Written in a conversational manner, Travis breaks down the vocabulary and steps to literary analysis so that a person new to Biblical or literary study can grasp it, and using multiple detailed examples, shows how to apply this knowledge. The author has, at all times, a reverent posture towards the Bible yet does not shy away from pointing to verses difficult to understand or to characters who are unsympathetic to a modern reader.Travis writes that he uses literary techniques to see the Bible with fresh eyes and that is exactly how this book has been useful to me. I have enjoyed being able to x-ray Biblical stories and expose the structure, the bones, of them which has caused me to confirm or re-consider my original opinions. And frankly, I've enjoyed the Old Testament stories more because I better control my understanding, instead of relying exclusively on others' opinions.
I believe this book is helpful for anyone who wants to go more in-depth with their personal Bible study, but specifically I think EATING YOUR WORDS is ideal for Christian students who would like a practical application for their English literature study or are at a loss to how to independently understand the stories of the Old Testament.
